From Profhilo to Polynucleotides – skin boosters explained.
What are Skin Boosters and how could they benefit my skin?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and over recent decades we have learnt more and more about the science of skin. We have come to understand that the common features of skin aging such as lines, dullness, loss of elasticity and pigmentation are actually caused by DNA damage. As we age, skin does not necessarily have to show these signs of damage and distress but in order to optimise its health, we need to look after it and invest in it (just like we look after our body by doing exercise).
One of the best ways to optimise skin health is to have a consistent medical-grade skincare regimen at home which will often consist of a daily sunscreen, vitamin C However, topical skincare can only penetrate the outermost skin layers and sometimes we need to treat the deeper layers to get the best results. That’s where skin boosters come in.
Skin boosters are injectable treatments that aim to improve skin health, hydration, DNA repair, fibroblast activity and increase collagen and elastin production. As a result of skin being healthier, it will appear more radiant, glowing, plump and youthful. Skin boosters purely improve the health and appearance of our skin. They will not “fill” or effect facial expressions. They are therefore perfect for those seeking natural results.
There are hundreds of skin boosters on the market so it can be really confusing to know which is best for you. At KinDRed Skin we offer the leading skin boosters on the market: Profhilo, Polynucleotides and Redensity 1.
So, which skin booster should I choose?
At KinDRed Skin, we always start with a bespoke consultation with a doctor. This is our opportunity to assess your skin and medical suitability, understand your concerns and explain which bespoke treatment we recommend for you. If we feel that you’d benefit from a skin booster, we will fully explain the different options.
Profhilo
This skin booster contains a very high concentration of hyaluronic acid and is therefore a great way to quickly increase skin hydration and glow. It is also a biomodulator and will stimulate collagen production over time.
Where is it used? It has a set pattern of injection points on the cheeks and lower face. It can also be used to treat lax skin on the neck, abdomen, upper arms and knees.
Who is it best for? We generally love Profhilo for people in their 40s or younger and we find it especially useful before events such as weddings or holidays.
How many treatments will I need? We recommend a course of 2 treatments, 1 month apart and then a single maintenance treatment every 4- 6 months.
Any down sides? Most people love Profhilo. However, it can be a little stingy to inject but we can use topical numbing cream if you need it. It cannot be used on the forehead or around the eye area.
Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are derived from fish DNA and once injected, get to work in our skin to stimulate our fibroblasts, repair our DNA and increase collagen and elastin production. They are a very powerful skin regeneration treatment. KinDRed Skin introduced polynucleotides before many other clinics in Bristol and Dr Hannah has a lot of experience in using these.
Where is it used? Polynucleotides are very versatile and can be used anywhere on the face, neck, body and hair. We especially love polynucleotides in the periocular area (around the eyes) where they can improve fine lines, crepey skin and dark circles.
Who is it best for? Polynucleotides are great for people of all ages. In younger patients, they can be used as a preventative measure and in mature patients, they can significantly improve skin laxity.
How many treatments do I need? This will depend on the product but we will usually recommend an initial course of 2-3 treatments, 1 month apart and then a single maintenance treatment every 4-6 months.
Any down sides? Most people love Polynucleotides. However, they can be a little stingy to inject. We will usually use topical numbing cream before this treatment. You will have little “bumps” under the skin immediately afterwards but these usually settle within 24 hours. This treatment isn’t suitable for people who have a fish allergy or are vegan.
Redensity 1
Redensity 1 is a beauty booster containing hyaluronic acid and a cocktail of skin-supporting amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Where is it used? Redensity 1 is very versatile and be used anywhere on the face and neck.
Who is it best for? We love Redensity 1 because it contains a small amount of lidocaine. This means it is less stingy to inject than some of the other skin boosters. We love it for forehead static lines and hand rejuvenation.
How many treatments do I need?
We recommend an initial course of 2-3 treatments, 1 month apart and then a single maintenance treatment every 4-6 months.
Any down sides? Most people love Redensity 1. You will have little “bumps” under the skin immediately after the treatment, but these usually go down within 24 hours.
In summary, almost everyone can benefit from a skin booster. They are suitable for any gender, age group and skin type. Book for a consultation with Dr Hannah to learn more.
